Furniture made to order.

We will take your order to make a KAIDAN DANSU (Staircase chest).

The Kaidan dansu shown in the photo is a replica made by Milk Hall.

As we mentioned in "The Restoration of Old Furniture", there is old furniture that we are sometimes unable to restore due to its very poor condition. However, the aged timber and iron handles in those pieces often looked so nice that we came up with the idea of making replica Kaidan dansus to utilize some of those materials.
In most cases, we use a Kimono chest of drawers (which is 120cm wide) for the basic structure, because they're usually made quite solidly to support the long drawers. Also, the timber used on the top of this type of furniture is quite thick compared to other old Japanese furniture. We also use some timber and parts taken from other old furniture to create a used and aged look in the replicas.

The size of a Kaidan dansu is approximately 120cm wide (at the base),100cm high and 40cm deep. The width of each step is 40cm and there are four steps/drawers. It takes one to three months to make a replica depending on how quickly we can gather the materials. We are also able to modify the size and the number and the direction of the steps if you wish. The cost starts at 250,000Yen.
